THE ARCH

THE ARCH is the signature garden construction for the soon to be installed rock garden,
CITY ROCKERY in Union Square Park. CITY ROCKERY has been approved by Commissioner Benepe
and the site has been selected by Deputy Commissioner Kavanagh. The garden will be located at
the 15th Street east subway entrance at the park. It will be composed of seven different micro rock garden
environments, each suitable for the New York City area. We will conduct workshops on rock gardening
on the site. We plan to plant a green roof garden on top of the subway cupola.

THE ARCH is composed of two stacked dry stone bases each approximately three feet long by two feet wide
and three feet high that are then planted with salixes (pussy willows) that are shaped to form the living arch
to eight feet high. In the crevices of the stacked stones we will plant special plants that enjoy growing in this
gravelly environment. The south and west facing exposure of the base will have sun loving small plants such
as sedums and semperviums. The north and east plants will have small ferns and other semi shade miniatures
that enjoy growing in the cracks. At the bases of the two stacked pillars we will plant larger rock garden plants.
THE ARCH will bloom in the spring and summer and in the fall as well. In winter the sculptural structure of
THE ARCH is evident when the salix has defoliated.

The opportunity to construct THE ARCH as a living sculpture in an ideal site at Two Coves will be the perfect place
to create that design as a separate unique garden. It is also a setting to illuminate the most sustainable form of
gardening for an urban environment. Rock garden plants once established use little or no fertilizer; require a lean
soil, and infrequent watering. We will offer a workshop in some of the techniques and plants of this installation
for the association. We would like to use the installation of THE ARCH to attract the public to TWO COVES
