Hello, I'm a local, Queens-based artist and designer. I'm writing to you in response to your Open Art call for the Two Coves Community Garden.
I'm also writing on behalf of my good friend and fellow collaborator who is also a Queens-based artist. We have developed a proposal together
for your Open Art call. It's called 'Tree of Glass' and you'll find a brief written description of it below. I have also attached two images which
give more details about how the piece would be constructed and how it would look in the space.
Thank you so much for your time and for the opportunity to share our ideas with you.
The 'Tree of Glass' is an interactive "living" sculpture constructed from recycled materials and live plants. The overall form is reminiscent of a tree
with gracefully swooping branches. The inner core of the piece is constructed from steel rods which are dug into the ground about 3-4' feet down
for stability. Around the outside of the core, recycled glass bottles are wired together (and to the steel rod core) to give the piece a beautiful and
varied texture. The different colored translucent glass of the bottles will play with the natural sunlight in the garden and make intriguing shadows.
The main branch has several plants hanging off it in containers made from recycled plastic bottles. Each hanging plant has several smaller
hangingplants below it. The top hanging plants drain into the plants below them. The public would be encouraged to help water the hanging
plants and to leave notes in the "watering date book". The "watering date book" is a small chalkboard with a hinged wooden door to protect
it from the elements. It's positioned near the base of the piece.
