Renewal’ – art proposal for the Two Coves Community Garden

‘Renewal’ is a sculptural art to be assembled from driftwood base, metal DNA helix, found flowerpot, and real plant.

I already have 50” tall found driftwood, which I photographed and represented on the photomontages.
DNA helix is to be formed from found and recyclable metal tubes. It is to be welded and painted by a group of
2-3 people including myself. The length of the DNA helix can vary and is to be determined on spot (by the community)
so the sculpture can be most visible and most beautifying. The Plant is to be planted by the garden community, which
will decide on which species of plant is to be used. The sculpture is to be about 90” tall or higher – if necessary.

‘Renewal’ is a symbolic sculpture that brings to attention a relationship between the organic and engineered nature,
and between biotechnology and Earth friendliness. An example of this relationship can be observed in restoration of
degraded vegetation, made possible by our renewed environmental consciousness and by the sensible use of biotechnology.
Please see:
http://www.biotechnology4u.com/biotechnology_environment_role_%20biotechnology_restoration_degraded_lands.html
for an in depth analysis of biotechnological methods used for revitalization of degraded lands.

Human technology and human developments, which often destroy wilderness, can be used to revitalize it, preserve it,
or create and/or organize it (gardening). It is up to us to decide how we will use them to direct and preserve the
organic natural evolution that is greatly beneficial to us. The results of bioengineering can be devastating mutations or
they can be revitalizing. ‘Renewal’ addresses this complex relationship between the organic and engineered nature by
showing: the first primordial layer (wood), which is dying out; the second industrial/scientific layer (metal, DNA helix),
which has proven to be both destructive and constructive; the third top layer (plant in the pot), which celebrates
a beautiful utopian fusion of the first and the second layer.
